A Bit of Wild West in Cody, Wyoming by Janet Chester Bly
My late husband Stephen Bly and I once a year traveled to Cody Wyoming for an Antique Winchester Collectors show. Otherwise, we probably wouldn’t spend much time there. But I’m glad we did.
Located on the western side of the Big Horn Basin, Cody Wyoming has many charms.
Founded by the legendary Buffalo Bill, Cody became a place for his pals to come west to hunt with him. Here are four reasons we loved this town and the region.
The Geology
You can drive to Yellowstone Park. Or cross the Beartooth Mountains. Or explore the Big Horn Mountains. Or take a quiet drive up the south fork of the Shoshone River. We enjoyed all these excursions.
The Museum
The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is one of the West’s premiere museums. Five museums in one, you can explore these themes: firearms, western art and sculpture, Native Americans, Buffalo Bill, and raptors and natural history. Stephen especially appreciated the Russell and Remington original pieces, as well as the guns. They have an excellent bookstore too. The merchandise includes more books, CDs, maps and other items about the west than any other bookstore we ever visited.
The Rodeo
From May to September Cody hosts an excellent nightly rodeo. About as good as the one in Mesquite, Texas. For those new to the sport, the event provides a fun introduction. Old time rodeo guys like my husband enjoyed it too. A big Cadillac with cow horns in front and speakers on top daily announces the times to all residents and tourists walking around downtown Cody.
The Hotel
Buffalo Bill built a hotel for his pals named after his daughter, Irma. The Irma Hotel is still an active part of Cody Wyoming. You can lodge at the hotel and suggest you ask to stay in the old section. Or you can eat at the restaurant where Stephen loved the bread pudding. Or sip a cool one at the bar. Or visit several gift shops. On the front steps every evening about 6:00 p.m., you can watch a rip roarin’, wild west staged gunfight.

Very good blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go
for a paid option? There are so many options out there that
I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Thank you!
