Squash blossom necklace provides pivotal evidence in new release contemporary western mystery novel Wind in the Wires

While most turquoise jewelry is crafted and set in silver, in Wind in the Wires a squash blossom necklace made of gold and turquoise assesses at almost priceless value. It also plays a prominent part of the mystery and intrigue of the story. Here’s a bit more info about the turquoise gem.

Turquoise creation depends on the whims of nature. There’s not a lot of it available. Some consider turquoise like petrified water. As water filters through rocks, it evaporates and dissolves minerals. After eons of this process, at times veins of shades of blue and green stones materialize.

Turquoise is a strange stone to value, in the first place. Pricing depends on customer preferences, the region, culture and traditions where the stone’s available. Some like them green. Others want blue. There are shades in-between and mottled varieties. Or spider web markings with brown, black, red or gold webbing.

Female protagonist Reba Cahill’s squash blossom necklace comes from the Silver Peak and Goldfield, Nevada region.  Nevada turquoise comes in various shades of blue, blue-green, green-blue, and green, all of which are considered valuable. Unique shades of bright mint to apple to neon yellow green can also be found. Zinc and iron mixed causes bright green to yellow-green shades.

The small central town of Austin, Nevada claims to be the unofficial turquoise capital of Nevada. With more jewelry stores than gas stations, the shops there offer both rough and cut stones.

Excerpt from contemporary western mystery Wind in the Wires…

He reached into his pocket and handed her a slip of paper.

Keep it, Reba was tempted to scream. She wanted nothing to do with her mother. No matter what, she wouldn’t change her mind. She refused to take a slow boat to anywhere. Or a snail’s pace Model T car trip to the desert. She gaped at the folded note, not much larger than a man’s thumb, as though torn from a scratch pad. Whatever the words, they could not begin to make up for years of silence. Of abandonment.

Why bother? Why deepen the wound?
