How would you describe prospectors?
Ever known any? How about grizzly and gray bearded? Dirty clothes and wide brimmed hat turned up in front? Pick in one hand and gold pan in the other? And of course, a faithful mule to ride.
Driving along the Salmon River between Slate Creek and Lucile, I noticed a man operator a raft mounted suction dredge. In his early twenties, he wore cut-off shorts, old Nikes and a Hawaiian print shirt. And White Sox cap. Instead of a mule, a gray and white Dodge Dakota pickup nearby. One of those genuine modern day prospectors.
Easy to discern one when you see them. Prospectors engage in exploring for valuable minerals. They come in all shapes and sizes. Always have. All it takes is hard work, mineral savvy, and eternal hope. Anyone can join the ranks of prospectors.
But you’ve got to be a true believer. You’ve got to believe there’s a good chance something valuable will be uncovered. That belief keeps folks digging.
Take the Bible, for instance.
Lots of folks think it’s an interesting religious document. They keep it on a dusty shelf with those Great Books of the Western World. But there are
true believers. For them, it’s a treasure box waiting for prospectors to mine. To discover the riches of God. God rewards those who seek Him.
“We must believe that he exists and rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
We all can be prospectors of that sort. With a guarantee of finding great treasures. Both now and in the life to come.
