A Touch of Paradise at Winchester Lake State Park
For over thirty years, we lived across the road from Winchester Lake State Park in north-central Idaho. What a privilege to hike to and through and three miles around this high mountain vacation spot any time we wanted, any season of the year.
You’ve got to realize Winchester Lake may be smaller than the ones you’re used to. Certainly the town of Winchester ranks as a village size with population about 350. Even so, many thousands of campers visit the park every year. They and regional day visitors enjoy catching the planted Rainbow Trout, Perch, Blue Gill and Tiger Muskie. We loved watching–from a distance–hardy souls sit for hours with special gear for ice fishing in the middle of winter. Other winter activities include cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
The park also provides summer activities of hiking, mountain biking or meandering around the lake in a canoe or other craft.
Small boats are allowed, but not gasoline engines.
If you spend the night in Tamarack, a deluxe yurt, you can use two included bicycles, as well as a canoe in summer and winter snowshoes. Or come in your RV or tent into one of the campsites, surrounded by Ponderosa pines, with a number of sites with views of the lake.
Or you could rent our former home, which converted to an AirB&B. It’s now owned by the Winchester Lake Lodge.
Now I live down the mountain in the Lewiston valley at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. That’s not too shabby either.
