Where Are You? Who Are You?
The Old West, being so thinly populated, provided a pretty easy place for hiding. Every other man you’d meet out in the wilderness hid from something or someone. A whole slew of terms sprung up to describe such folks.
–among the willows
–brushing up
–going to Texas
–hankering to sniff the Gulf breeze
–heading for the setting sun
–holed up
–on the dodge
–pulling for the Rio Grande
–riding the coolies, the high lines, or the hoot owl trail
–taking to the toolies
–traveling the lonesome places
–watering his horse at night
Humans Tend To Hide
We all have a natural tendency for hiding, to not want to face our mistakes. We run away from them. Seldom do we volunteer to own up to the consequences of our actions. Folks started running from God for the same reason a long, long time ago.
After sinning in the Garden of Eden, the Bible says Adam and Eve hid from the Lord among the trees. Of course, God found them. If not so serious, what a comical sight. The only two humans on earth thought they could squat behind a plum tree and not be noticed. Come to think of it, where and how do we hide from God?
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7)
The Psalmist answered his own question. God will search him out no matter where he might go.
Hiding From God
Somehow we never really believe He cares or will pay attention. So, we ignore the Bible. We refuse to go to church. When the Christian channels come up, we flip on by. We avoid Christian friends. When we do that, we’re really trying to hide from God. That’s as silly as Adam and Eve hunkered behind a tree.
Instead, we should go straight to our heavenly Father, admit our neglect of Him, and ask His forgiveness. It’s the sane way to get on with our lives and enjoy the good things God has in store for us. That beats spiritually riding the hoot owl trail, or watering the horse by night, or taking to the toolies.
