Have a Little Javelina in Ya?
A friend of mine runs a thousand head of hogs down in the hills of California. These animals roam wild on the fenced mountain terrain. They root out acorns and other tasty morsels, as well as break into a cornfield now and then. We drove his pickup into a canyon one time. As he got out to check on a spring, he pulled out a revolver.
“We goin’ huntin’?” I asked.
He grinned. “I hope not. There’s a big old sow that hides in this brush. I haven’t gotten her rounded up for over six years. If she catches me out of the pickup, she’ll charge right over the top of me like a wild javelina. The gun’s for protection.”
Javelina Virtues & Vices
Javelinas hail from Texas and the southwest. This musk hog (or peccary) can be quick and ferocious. One cowboy told me a javelina looks like a ball of hair with a butcher knife run through it. Even when tamed, they can be very hostile to strangers. They’d make good guard pigs.
Reminds me of a former neighbor of ours down in Los Angeles. Once we went out to dinner with him and his family. He managed to offend so many people in two hours that he got close exchanging blows more than once. We declined further invitations after that. To be out in public with this guy amounted to taking a javelina to a salad bar.
Boorish Behavior
I suppose there’s a little javelina in us all, given the right goad. Such an attribute might be picturesque in a wild brush hog, but not so nice for everyday social graces. With God’s help, we can make a clean break of the tendency to lash out. Every day, practice being gentle with others, no matter the situation. Be sensitive as possible. In fact, the Bible’s got a word or two about this.
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander” (Ephesians 4:31 Message)
