An Old-Fashioned Jiggle
Like gearshifts on your pickup, horses operate at different speeds or gaits. You can walk, trot, gallop, amble, canter or jiggle a horse. Your animal can be 4-gaited or 5-gaited, depending on their training.
In the Old West, they had a great name for the ordinary gait of a cow horse. They called it a jiggle. When you jiggled your horse to town, you traveled at the normal, average speed for that particular pony. That usually meant about 5 miles per hour. Horses last longest at that ordinary gait.
People Pacing
People, too, have a normal, everyday gait. There’s an efficient pace of life that can be sustained over a long range. Too slow and you’re worthless. Try to race too much and you soon collapse. It’s not a trot, gallop, or sprint. It’s a spiritual walk.
“If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
When you stroll at the right speed, you’re slow enough to experience good fellowship with other believers and also to understand and savor the many blessings of God. You make progress as you aim for your heavenly destination. And you get closer to the finish line. At times, you gather up your garments and run the race set before you. But you can’t sustain that stride for too long. After a while, you need to drop back to normal.
Pace yourself. Walk it out. Or do an old-fashioned jiggle.
