BEST OPEN FACED PIE EVER
Moose Monroe had just finished his supper of chicken fried steak with extra gravy on his french fries when he looked up and bellowed for the waitress to bring him a double helping of that open faced pie. It’s been a tradition with Moose to order pie with his meal whenever he eats at the Drover’s Café. And I surely don’t blame him for wanting two pieces of Margie’s pie.
In the Old Days
Back in the old days all pies were baked. Before iceboxes came along, cream pies were unheard of. That meant all pies, from apple to mince to cherry, came with a crust on top, as well as on the bottom.
That is, except for custard pie. A baked custard pie has only a single crust, of course. And the cowboys soon began to call it an open faced pie.
Best Custard Pie
I confess that I know next to nothing about how to bake a pie, but I can tell you there never was a custard pie as sweet as the one you can eat at the Drover’s Café. It’s enough to make the honeybees jealous and the hibernating bear give up his nap.
But there is something sweeter than Margie’s custard pie.
Sweeter Than Honey Words
In Psalms 19, God’s Word is described as being perfect, trustworthy, right, radiant, pure, and altogether righteous. Then it is said to be, “More precious than gold; than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb” (Psalm 19:10).
At first glance it might seem a little strange to call laws, statutes, precepts, commands, and ordinances . . . sweet. But think about it. Obedience to God’s Word was never meant to be an experience like having to be force-fed some foul-tasting medicine. The Lord made obedience a pleasurable event.
True Joy
There is a joy in the soul and a satisfaction in the mind when we comply with God’s commands. It should be a joyful event that makes us want to hurry and be obedient again.
Each bite of yielding to God’s Word should make us hungry for more. We have succumbed to a lie if we believe that obeying Scriptures bring sorrow and bitterness.
Psalm 119 says, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore, I hate every wrong path” (vs. 103,104).
Tasty Lifestyle
Common trait of heroes of the faith: they obeyed. Obedience brings blessing. After tasting a lifestyle of compliance to God’s Word, everything else is rather tasteless and flat, even the open faced pie at the Drover’s Café.
