Straight ahead, two thin lines of cold steel melted together and plunged into the western horizon. Behind him, the East. All that Sandy Thompson ever knew existed back there. Too much sorrow. Too much disappointment. Too much trouble with the law. He made a habit of forgetting, but now and then then the memories stole back. The war lost, family scattered or dead, hope harder to find than a whisper on a windy day. He felt the uncomfortable rush of old feelings and quickly looked for a diversion.
