About Janet Chester Bly
Janet Chester Bly is an award-winning author, speaker, writing mentor, and the steward of Bly Books, preserving the literary legacy she built alongside her late husband, western novelist Stephen Bly.
A self-described “city girl with a country heart,” Janet followed Stephen to the small mountain community of Winchester, Idaho, where together they wrote books, raised a family, served in ministry, and embraced life in the rural Northwest. After Stephen’s passing in 2011, Janet remained in Winchester for another decade, continuing the work they began together while surrounded by the people and places that inspired so much of their writing.
Janet has authored more than a dozen nonfiction and fiction books of her own and co-authored many others with Stephen. Her writing spans inspirational nonfiction, family life, devotionals, western fiction, contemporary mysteries, and stories for young readers.

A Family Writing Adventure
One of Janet’s most meaningful projects came after Stephen’s death. Together with her three sons—Russell, Michael, and Aaron—she completed Stephen’s unfinished western novel, Stuart Brannon’s Final Shot. The family faced an unusual challenge: Could a committee write fiction?
With only a few months and a deep love for Stephen’s work, they set out to finish the story he had begun. The result became both a published novel and a cherished family memory that continues to inspire readers today.
Encouraging Readers and Writers
Throughout her career, Janet has spoken at conferences, retreats, women’s events, and writing workshops. She has mentored hundreds of aspiring writers and has served as a manuscript critique consultant for numerous authors.
Her experience includes judging writing contests for organizations such as Writer’s Digest, American Christian Fiction Writers, and other professional writing groups. Janet is passionate about helping writers discover their voice while encouraging readers through stories of faith, family, perseverance, and hope.
Life Beyond the Books
Janet holds a degree in Literature, Languages, and Fine & Performing Arts from Lewis-Clark State College.
She loves reading across many genres, collecting western and country antiques, exploring local history, and spending time with family and friends. She enjoys a good mystery, classic westerns, inspiring biographies, and stories that celebrate courage, faith, and the human spirit.
A fascinating bit of family history: Janet was born on the very day the famous flag raising at Iwo Jima took place during World War II, while her father was serving overseas in Europe.
A New Season of Adventure
Today, Janet enjoys a rich and active life centered on faith, family, friendship, and community. After spending many years in the small mountain town of Winchester, Idaho, she now lives closer to her sons and grandchildren, where she has embraced a wonderful new season of life filled with opportunities, activities, and meaningful relationships.
While she continues to cherish lifelong friendships and stays connected with readers through Bly Books newsletters, blogs, and correspondence, Janet has also built a vibrant circle of new friends through Bible studies, women’s groups, community activities, exercise programs, and volunteer opportunities. Her calendar is often filled with conversations, gatherings, mentoring relationships, and time spent encouraging others.
After decades of writing books for publication, Janet now directs much of her creative energy toward preserving family stories and memories for future generations. She remains passionate about encouraging readers, supporting writers, and sharing the legacy that she and Stephen built together through Bly Books.
Whether spending time with family, enjoying an afternoon with friends, mentoring someone through a life transition, or gathering for one of her much-enjoyed pizza outings, Janet continues to live the values that have always been woven throughout her books—faith, family, perseverance, kindness, and genuine connection.
She has never been one to let age define her limits or keep her from embracing new opportunities. Instead, she continues to approach life with curiosity, gratitude, and an eagerness to discover what comes next. New friendships, new experiences, and new adventures have become part of this chapter, just as surely as writing was part of the last.
The stories may have begun on the printed page, but today their legacy continues through the relationships, encouragement, and lives they continue to touch.
