Where The Deer and the Antelope Play by Stephen Bly … Book 3, Code of the West western novel series
It’s not a home on the range that Pepper Paige is worried about. It’s getting Tap to the altar on time and in one piece! In two weeks Tap will tip his hat to bachelorhood. But then again, this is Tap Andrews who has a knack for finding trouble behind every tumbleweed. Right here where the deer and the antelope play.
Two more week! Normally that would be enough time to take care of business. However, a gang of rustlers invade his ranch. A missed bank payment means the bank’s trying to foreclose. A sniper takes potshots at him. A friend’s business destroyed. Problems at the local dance hall. However, Tap’s word is good, even if his timing’s not.
Now if his fiancee can just get him to stand in one place long enough to get hitched. Then they’ll be able to set off on the happy trails of life together. Or will they? It seems the wild ride never stops.
Wade Eagleman smoked a large, loosely rolled cigar as he reclined in the leather-backed captain’s chair on the other side of the poker table. His long, black hair and Comanche heritage exuded confidence…”Cards? Tap, how many do you want?”
Tap Andrews slid open the unindexed playing cards slowly and watched each one come into view. Ace of clubs. Nine of hearts. Eight of spades. Eight of clubs. Ace of spades. Black aces and eights!
“Come on, Tap. It’s gettin’ close to noon. How many cards do you want?”
A thick cloud of tobacco smoke hovered over the table and burned his eyes. “What time is it?”
“Eleven thirty.”
“I’m dead!”
Eagleman pulled the cigar from his mouth. “The hand can’t be that bad.”
“The wedding!” Tap threw his cards face up on the table. “I’ve got to get to the wedding by noon.”
