Excerpt from Where the Deer and the Antelope Play Code of the West western novel:
Wade Eagleman smoked a large, loosely rolled cigar as he reclined in the leather-backed captain’s chair on the other side of the poker table. His long, black hair and Comanche heritage exuded confidence…”Cards? Tap, how many do you want?”
Tap Andrews slid open the unindexed playing cards slowly and watched each one come into view. Ace of clubs. Nine of hearts. Eight of spades. Eight of clubs. Ace of spades. Black aces and eights!
“Come on, Tap. It’s gettin’ close to noon. How many cards do you want?”
A thick cloud of tobacco smoke hovered over the table and burned his eyes. “What time is it?”
“Eleven thirty.”
“I’m dead!”
Eagleman pulled the cigar from his mouth. “The hand can’t be that bad.”
“The wedding!” Tap threw his cards face up on the table. “I’ve got to get to the wedding by noon.”
