The Land Tamers, historical western fiction by Christy Award winning western author Stephen Bly
1870 high society called him gaunt. But out west, he ranked as hardened. In this historical western fiction, a fugitive from Yankee justice, Confederate veteran Sandy Thompson seeks peace and solitude. He tries to find it in the expanses of the untamed West. His quest is complicated by his reluctant business partnership with a low-down peddler named Montana Mudd, and Mowrey, an orphaned Indian girl entrusted to his care.
Somehow, together, the three drifters must find a new home. They look for it in a land where thieves, vengeful enemies, and forces of nature constantly threaten. And the trio must finally come to grips with the sinister Yankee officer determined to see Sandy dead.

Excerpt:
Straight ahead, two thin lines of cold steel melted together and plunged into the western horizon. Behind him, the East. All that Sandy Thompson ever knew existed back there. Too much sorrow, disappointment, and trouble with the law. He made a habit of forgetting, but now and then the memories stole back. The war lost, family scattered or dead, hope harder to find than a whisper on a windy day. He felt the uncomfortable rush of old feelings and quickly looked for a diversion. For the hundredth time his eyes focused on the weathered sign posted at the front of the railway car: May 10th, 1869, Great Event. Railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific, Grand Opening of the Union Pacific Railroad.
