Excerpt from Hazards of the Half-Court Press, Lewis & Clark Squad kids fiction series:
The ball bounced high on the glass but dropped straight into the net. “Yes!” Larry pumped his right arm back and forth as he trotted out into position for playing defense. Cody heard most of the 200 or so people in the bleachers clap and cheer.
This time Dink dribbled back and forth above the three-point line with Feather in pursuit. “When are you and Clark getting married?” He flipped his hair out of his eyes with his left hand and dribbled with his right.
Feather kept her long, thin arms straight out to her sides as she kept between Dink and the basket. “What are you talking about?”
“Everyone in Halt knows you tow are a number.”
She reached in to slap the ball away. She missed. “We’re only thirteen.”
“Yeah, but you’re you know … you two have obviously been … ”
Feather stopped her pursuit and dropped her hands to her hips. “We’ve obviously been what?” she demanded.
The split second of fury in her green eyes was exactly what Dink was looking for. As she hesitated, he broke around her and drove to the basket. Cody sprinted up to block him, but Dink glanced at Freight Train. Cody dropped back to intercept a pass that never came. It was an easy lay-in for Dink.
