Excerpt from The Land Tamers:

The Union Pacific train rattled along somewhere between Omaha and Cheyenne. Sandy Thompson wasn’t sure exactly where. To the south he could still see the winding path of North POlatte. To the north stretched the vast prairie of the newly formed stateof Nebraska. Straight ahead, two thin lines of cold steel melted together and plunged into the western horizon.

Behind him the East. All that Sandy ever knew existed back there. Too much sorrow. Too much disappointment. And too much trouble with the law. He made a habit of forgetting, but now and then the memories stole back. The war lost, family scattered or dead, hope harder to find than a whisper on a windy day.
