Western romance novel by Christy Award winning author Stephen Bly: Throw the Devil Off the Train
In this western romance novel, Catherine Draper Goodwin heads West to get a fresh start with her fiancé. Race Hillyard seeks revenge for his brother’s death. They clash on the long train ride from Omaha to Sacramento. And something evil is on board.
Can they make peace long enough to throw the devil off the train?
Catherine and her identical twin sister Catelynn grew up in the genteel world of the antebellum South. As the Civil War loomed, Mrs. Goodwin convinced her husband to send the twins to her sister’s in Boston. Though both of their parents perished, the girls never found out until the end of the war.
Off To California
Unable to settle her parents’ estate and estranged from her sister, Catherine finally decides to go to California where Philip Draper, her lifelong friend, owned a thriving grocery store and ended each of his letters with “when are you coming here to marry me?” Though she isn’t sure she loves Philip, she has few options. So she sells her possessions and scrapes together enough money to reach California by train. Finally, Catherine will have stability.
But on the trip West, a man offers Catherine twenty dollars to give him a tearful kiss goodbye to win a bet. Hoping to use the money to upgrade her ticket to a Pullman car for the long ride, Catherine agrees. That sets off a sequence of events that will change the course of her life.
