NORA ROSE’S VANILLA ICE CREAM Recipe by Janet Chester Bly
This is my family’s and was especially my late hubby’s — absolutely all-time favorite homemade vanilla ice cream. No other vanilla ice cream measures up, according to the Bly family. It was first introduced to the extended Bly family sometime in the late 1950s by a gal named Nora Rose who worked in Grandpa Bly’s tomato packing house in the small farming community of Ivanhoe, California.
Nora Rose’s vanilla ice cream was featured at many poolside pageant parties around 4th of July celebrations. Nora Rose’s vanilla ice cream was immediately dubbed “the best in town.” Years later when we moved to north-central Idaho, this vanilla ice cream was prepared for every July 4th Winchester Days event at the church booth.
Whenever I wanted to prepare a special sweet for hubby that I knew would delight his little heart, I pulled out this recipe. Whenever he turned to a low-carb diet, the ingredients were definite no-nos, even with the low-sugar version. He either cheated and enjoyed it anyway, or I reverted to the Low-Carb Fruited Freeze version which he tolerated quite well. But, it isn’t Nora Rose’s! That’s why extra flavor must be added, such as the berries.

Nora Roses Vanilla Ice Cream
Ingredients:
- 4 eggs, well beaten (sometimes I eliminate the eggs and it’s good that way too)
- 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk (if this tastes too strong, use ½ can of this milk and ½ of heavy cream)
- 1 large can (12 oz.) evaporated milk
- 1 cup sugar (or equivalent sugar substitute such as Splenda, though this will not make the ice cream completely sugar-free unless you use sugar-free condensed milk)
- dash of salt
- 3 T. vanilla (white vanilla, if you want the ice cream whiter)
- 1 qt. half & half
- 1 qt. milk
Directions:
Combine all ingredients. Chill in refrigerator for at least an hour. Mix in freezer. Makes one gallon.
