In Book 6, Code of the West western novel series, Tap and Pepper are ready to settle down. Too bad no one else is. Now that Tap’s a husband and soon-to-be father, it’s more like riding a bucking bronco down a sheer cliff without a saddle. The sprawling 50,000 acre Slash-Bar-4 Ranch full of rolling range land and timbered valleys sounds like heaven. So it’s off to Montana.
As Tap and a nine-month pregnant Pepper Andrews head north, there’s little protection from outlaws, bank robbers, and the needs of pacifist neighbors being scared off their homestead. There are other harassments too. Like cattle grazing in their living room and Indians camped in their yard.

The wooden hubs of the wagon wheels creaked. The buckboard springs bounced. The hooves of the draft horses clopped ahead of them. Tethered saddle horses Onespot and Roundhouse whinnied behind the wagon.
Pepper felt sweat form on the back of her neck and forehead despite the dry, slightly cool air. Her back ached. Her derriere seemed permanently attached to the wagon seat. The beginning of the two-week journey north from Pine Bluffs remained a dim picture in her memory. She could not remember a time she wasn’t pregnant. The plain, long brown dress was the only one she owned she could still wear. She refused to alter or purchase another.
I will burn this the day the baby is born!
