Grace could feel the sweat form at the high collar of her jacket. She pulled a white linen handkerchief out of her pocket and dabbed her neck. “I didn’t mean to sound like I was giving orders. I’m tired. I’d like to get to my room, if you don’t mind assisting me now.”
He didn’t move a muscle. Instead he studied the two women still perched in the upstairs window across the street. “Are you always this bossy?”
Another explosion. She glanced at the buildings on the far side of the street. No one came out of the station this time. There was another shot. She looked back at the man. Someone is shooting up the town and no one cares. He is toying with me. I do not like that. Especially while he’s looking at those women. “I am not bossy, but I have never in my life had so much trouble finding someone to assist me.”
“No, I reckon you haven’t.” He pulled the revolver out of his holster.
“What did you mean by that? And what are you doing with that gun?”
“You expect folks to jump when you talk.” He half-cocked the hammer and spun the cylinder. “And what I’m doin’, obviously, is checkin’ to make sure I’m loaded up.”
